Redesign Package Construction

Introduction

It is now time to construct your flat package design into an actual package. This can be very tricky and might require multiple attempts. This portion of your project is weighted heavily in the final project rubric. Take time to get this right. Get critique from friends, classmates, lab assistants, tutors and the instructor to help increase your package quality.

There will be no additional page created for your pitch book in this activity.

Package Constructions

Most students choose to recreate some sort of box for their product. This is not mandatory. You can use existing containers if you would like. You will need to remove all old stickers/labels and replace them with your own.

Your final constructed package should meet the following requirements:

  • High quality print
  • Appealing design
  • UPC, Nutrition Facts, Copyright/Trademark, and other relative information
  • Can hold the product (not constructed with flimsy paper)
  • No smudges or excess glue
  • Clean, crisp edges (Scored edges)
  • All edges align

Watch the following video tutorial to see a demonstration of the construction process:

Scoring & Folding

Folding heavy paper can often crack. Scoring is a process of preparing your paper to fold with minimal cracking. The following video will demonstrate some good scoring and folding techniques. The video uses a bone folder, but you can use any blunt object.

Removing Adhesive

Here are a couple websites that might give you some hints on how to remove stickers from your container:

Blog Photos

You will be asked to put photos of your finished package design on your weekly blog post. These photos don’t need to be spectacular. They only need to showcase your finished product. The images should meet the following requirements:

  • At least two images to display the front and back of your package
  • Good lighting that allows the viewer to see the package details
  • Non-pixelated images

Here is a sample of the photo quality and requirements:

It would also be good, but not required, to get some pictures of the construction process. This would help those viewing your blog to visualize what it took to create your package. This would help set you apart from other, more text-heavy, portfolio blogs/websites.
