Product Redesign Plan

Introduction

You never want to go into a project without a plan. This activity will help you decide what you want to do for your product redesign. You will research an array of products and designs to decide what product you want to redesign. You will then do some research on your chosen product for inclusion in your redesign book. This research will help you determine your target audience and how you will appeal to them with your design. You do not need to design anything at this point.

Inspiration

Open a Pinterest Account: You will need to create a Pinterest account if you don’t already have one. After logging into your account create a board named “Product Redesigns.” Check out my “Product Redesigns” Pinterest board (Please don’t repin more than two of my pins for this activity): http://pinterest.com/lybberte/product-redesigns/

Here is a video that will demonstrate how to create a Pinterest board: http://youtu.be/CCelCpP2wqc

Pin Product Redesigns Examples: Search Pinterst, Google, or anywhere else on the web for some good examples/inspiration on product redesigns. This will help the creative juices to start flowing. You will need to pin/repin a minimum of 10 product design examples.

Selection & Plan

Select a Product: Choose a package that you feel needs a redesign. Some helpful tips in making your selection are:

  •  Go to the store. You will find many proucts that could stimulate some ideas.
  •  Use a product you already have. This is fine as long as the package is in good shape.
  •  Plenty of product history. Choose a product that has a good website or good product history. You may even want to check for  a logo at www.brandsoftheworld.com.
  •  Scanning and Design. It works best to choose a product that will fit on a standard page size when unwrapped or unfolded.

Write a Redesign Plan: Write a one-page plan and include the following: product name, target group, brief history, and a big idea to redesign the package and advertise it (Include how you plan to increase sales). Write this in Microsoft Word to gauge the length and catch any obvious grammar and spelling mistakes.

This plan is meant for inclusion in your printed book. Do not use phrases like “I feel” or “I believe.” The printed book will be given to your potential client. Be bold and definite. A client won’t hire you based on your feelings or beliefs.
