Podcast Images & Video

Introduction

It is now time to compile the video/images portion of your podcast. This is the meat and potatoes of your podcast. Take time to capture good video or gather large quality images.

Podcast Time Limit

The time restriction on your podcast is 90 seconds to 150 seconds. This restriction is for several reasons. First, the average length watched of a single internet video is 2.7 minutes. Longer videos don’t keep the viewer’s attention. Second, it is an important to know how to condense a message into small digestible bites. Third, the video created is meant to be included in the company app. Apps run faster and better when associated files are not too large. It will be hard to compress the video under 5mb if  the video goes beyond the 3 minute mark.

If you will be using mostly video, or you are doing a screen capture, you will want to limit the video to around 90 seconds. Once again this ties back to compressing the video under 5mb.

Design & Prepare Images/Slides

Use the template you created for your intro and conclusion slides when designing the rest of your slides. This will keep everything organized and the same dimensions. Once you have designed all of your slides, export them as high quality JPGs. Be sure to save them as RGB (not CMYK). It is a good idea to number your JPGs in the order they should appear in your video. This will help when  you start putting them into iMovie.

Design & Prepare Video or Screen Captures

Make sure that your intro and conclusion slides are set to the same aspect ratio as your video. This will make the transition from your slides to your video smooth and appealing. Please use a program that you can zoom in on the screen if you are doing a screen capture. Demonstrating processes done on a computer can be very hard to follow if you can’t zoom in on what you are demonstrating.

Inserting Slides/Videos in iMovie

You will now import your video/slides into iMovie. Follow the written iMovie Podcasting tutorial, or watch the videos below to learn how to use iMovie. Your video should include the following:

  • The intro and conclusion slides
  • A minimum of 12 content slides (Not the intro/conclusion)
  • A minimum of 90 seconds of video (If video is being used instead of slides)

Limit the use of pan and zoom effects in your video. It will be much harder to compress your final video under 5mb if you have too many of these transitions. Higher quality compression is needed to smoothly render these transitions which equates to a larger file size.

Export a compressed video

Use the iMovie Podcasting tutorial (Last page) to export your project as a compressed mp4 file. This tutorial will walk you through how to compress your video under 5mb. This will act as practice for your final project that all needs to be under 5mb. Create a new Weekly Blog Post and hit the “Add Media” button in WordPress and upload your 5mb video. Then click the “Insert into page” button. This will give you a text link that will download/open your video podcast from your post.

Upload to YouTube

In addition to uploading your 5mb video to your WordPress, you will also be uploading a non-compressed version of your podcast to YouTube. This can simply be done in iMovie by selecting “Share” and then “YouTube.” Using the share feature in iMovie takes much less time then exporting a high quality video and then uploading it through the YouTube site. Once the video is on your YouTube account, embed the video in your Weekly Blog Post.
