Introduction
It helps to view samples of several types of video podcasts to get ideas for your own. Keep in mind that you can use still images, video footage, or a combination of both. You also need to narrate at least half of the video and include music background for at least 20 seconds (as the intro and conclusion for example).
Inspiration
You can find examples of video podcasts all over the Internet. For example, YouTube and the iTunes Store are full of great examples. Look around for examples of Podcasts that you like. This will help you decide what type of podcast you want to create.
Here are a few video podcasts from past students:
- Coralie Fisher – My fairy findings
- Joel Davenport – Journey to the west
- Rob Kellas – Video Portfolio
- Elissa Stewart – Papyrus
Now go to www.okaydave.com/okaydave2006.html and watch portions of his videos where he talks about his design projects. Notice how he mixes video footage with still shots. He often uses a pan/zoom effect on the still shots to make them appear to move like video. You can find examples of this in the St. Petersburg and Kennedy Center videos, but all of these are worth browsing: Cadence – Brinker – St Petersburg – Kennedy Center – Reflect/Respect
Copyright & Fair Use
Take some time to review the University policies on copyright and fair use. You will need to understand the copyright issues involved with using images and music.
The fair use exception exists to achieve a balance between copyright owners and the general public who may benefit from using copyrighted works without seeking permission. A fair use is any copying of copyrighted material done for a limited and “transformative” purpose, such as to comment upon, criticize, or parody a copyrighted work. The Fair Use doctrine recognizes the need to permit reasonable public access to copyrighted works …
Selecting a Topic
Your video podcast can be on almost any topic that is informative or entertaining suitable for a prospective employer to view on your final portfolio website.
You may create a type of ePortfolio, but it is also very effective to show and tell something about your personality that will not be obvious when viewing your work on your website. This is a chance to show something other than your projects that will already be displayed on your website. Choose a topic that you are passionate about! This will help and inspire you to produce your best work.
Video Podcast Plan
Create a new blog post that describes your research and your video podcast plan. This should be at least two paragraph description that includes the following:
First Paragraph
- What example(s) did you find inspirational (Embed these examples in the post)?
- What about these example(s) would you like to incorporate into your own video podcast?
- What in the example(s) did you dislike or would you avoid
Second Paragraph
- Your chosen topic
- Why you are passionate about this topic/why you chose this topic
- What type of media you plan on using (Video/Still Pictures/A mixture of both)
